El Paso County deputy discharged after DUI, weapons charges

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) reports that Deputy Sheriff David Smith was discharged from his position on Aug. 12 after being charged in connection with an alleged DUI crash.

EPSO says it served Smith with a notice of intent to terminate employment on Aug. 3.

According to the sheriff's office, 41-year-old Smith was contacted by the Colorado Springs Police Department while off duty on July 21.

Police charged Smith with:

  • Driving under the influence
  • Careless driving
  • Accident driving under the influence
  • Prohibited use of weapons

The sheriff's office said Smith had worked for the agency since September 2024 and was assigned to the Detention Security Division.
