Affidavit released in Suzanne Morphew murder case, Barry Morphew released from jail

SALIDA, Colo. (KRDO) -- The affidavit for Barry Morphew's arrest in connection with Suzanne Morphew's disappearance was released Monday morning after months of court proceedings.

The affidavit totals more than 120 pages and includes new details provided by investigators in the case against Barry, who's facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with Suzanne's disappearance. Suzanne's body still hasn't been found.

Here are some of the biggest revelations from the affidavit:

  • Barry told an acquaintance that he didn't think he'd pass a polygraph in the days after his wife vanished, he told an investigators he wouldn't take one when they asked because they weren't accurate enough to be admissible in court.
  • Barry referred to his wife in past tense to investigators less than three weeks after she disappeared, saying "I wish you knew how amazing she was."
  • Barry filed for guardianship over Suzanne on June 1, 2020 -- less than a month after she vanished. It allowed him to sign paperwork for her, and ultimately, liquidate some of the assets the two shared. He closed on the sale of a property in Indiana on June 6, 2020 and sold her car in mid-July.
  • In October of 2020, Barry met a woman who later told investigators that she was often told she resembled Suzanne. Though both her and Barry denied having a sexual relationship, they did spend Valentine's Day at the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs. Surveillance photos show him carrying her luggage, while she carried a large bouquet of flowers.

Testimony during a hearing in August revealed that the relationship between Barry and Suzanne was rocky. Suzanne had discussed divorce and was sending romantic messages to a former partner.

Prosecutors say that Barry wouldn't allow divorce, and that was the motive behind the killing. Morphew's defense counsel disputed that and said the case is "based on supposition."
