Fugitive wanted in Florida for alleged violent sexual assault of a juvenile caught in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) says it assisted in the arrest of a fugitive wanted for an alleged violent sexual assault of a juvenile.

According to CSPD, detectives with the U.S. Marshals Service Southern Colorado Violent Offender Task Force were contacted by law enforcement officials in Florida about a wanted fugitive, who they thought was in Colorado Springs.

CSPD says U.S. Marshals, along with members of the Fountain Police Department's Directed Investigations Community Engagement division, followed up on the lead. They requested assistance from CSPD's tactical units and a mobile drone from the Real Time Crime Center, according to officials. They were also assisted by a Pueblo County Sheriff's Office K9, Zeus, who is assigned to the U.S. Marshals Task Force, CSPD says.

The fugitive was located in the 2000 block of Wold Avenue around noon on Tuesday. CSPD says officers approached the front door and announced their presence when the drone operator noticed the suspect trying to run out the back door.

CSPD says its tactical team and K9 Zeus issued warnings, and when the suspect realized there was a K9 on scene, they surrendered without more resistance.

According to officials, the suspect was transported to the Criminal Justice Center, where he is now awaiting extradition to Florida. CSPD says that due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, his identity is not currently being released.
