Court records say Walsenburg man threatened to ‘shoot up’ Department of Human Services after daughter’s death

Norman Renegar

WALSENBURG, Colo. (KRDO) -- After the death of his 9-year old in Walsenburg earlier this month, Norman Renegar, 43, made multiple death threats to Huerfano County's Sheriff, a child welfare supervisor, an attorney for his children, staff at Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center, and the Huerfano County Coroner, according to court records obtained by KRDO.

Pueblo Police announced they had helped the Huerfano County Sheriff's Office arrest the suspect last week.

Renegar's 9-year old daughter was found unresponsive in a residence by deputies on September 2. The child was pronounced deceased by medical personnel on the scene, and an investigation into the child's death is ongoing.

According to court documents, Renegar called an employee of the Department of Social Services for Huerfano County after his daughter's death. The employee told investigators that Renegar indicated he would "shoot up the place." Huerfano County's Department of Human Services immediately went on lockdown and employees were sent home.

At 11:52 a.m., staff at Spanish Peaks Regional Health Center reported seeing Renegar at the Emergency Room. Renegar allegedly made threats to staff saying he was 'going to get a gun and shoot everybody'. While at the emergency room, staff said Renegar made threats to kill the Huerfano County's Coroner as well.

Less than 30 minutes later, Renegar called dispatch warning that he would kill his daughter's legal representative in family court, as well as that individual's daughter.

Court records say Renegar then told dispatch in a separate call: 'You have no jurisdiction, your jurisdiction just ran out. Good luck, you are all dead."

The arrest affidavit states that Renegar called the Sheriff's Office again demanding to speak with Huerfano County Sheriff Bruce Newman. Telling the sheriff in a series a phone calls that there is nothing deputies could do to spare their own lives.

Later that day, investigators noticed that Renegar's posted a photo of his daughter on his Facebook page with the caption: "Rest in peace, daddy loves, I will make them all pay, promise."

Renegar was listed in the Huerfano County Jail on three separate charges, including extortion, menacing, and obstructing government operations. He was advised of his charges on Tuesday, and his next scheduled court appearance is on September 27.
