Trial begins for Pueblo man accused of dismembering mother
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- In October of 2020, Anthony Cuevas was arrested for first-degree murder after police investigators said he killed his mother, Mary Cuevas-Garcia, and then chopped up her body parts, put them in suitcases, and scattered them across Pueblo.
Tuesday, 36-year-old Cuevas appeared in court and is set to stand a jury trial in the coming weeks. For much of Tuesday, the judge initiated a voir dire process, which ensures jurors in a case do not have a conflict of interest with any potential witness or party in the case.
Melanie Cuevas, the wife of Anthony Cuevas, was arrested in April of 2020 for accessory to first-degree murder in the killing of Mary Cuevas-Garcia. On Tuesday, KRDO learned that Melanie Cuevas is expected to appear on Wednesday and exercise her Fifth Amendment right in the trial.
Police made the arrest in 2019 after they say Anthony was caught on surveillance video throwing a suitcase with his mother's remains into a dumpster at a Pueblo car wash.
According to the Joint Witness List, obtained by KRDO, the prosecution has listed 146 witnesses that could appear in court, while the defense has listed eight names that could appear.
