Costco on N. Nevada Ave. evacuated after reported gas smell

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the Costco Wholesale off N. Nevada Ave. was evacuated on reports of a gas leak.

According to the Colorado Springs Fire Department, someone claimed to have smelled gas and spotted a black cloud in the back of the store.

The CSFD's hazmat team entered the store and began to survey the building, using machinery to pick up any possible gas.

The team did not pick up any gas, now they're working to see whether or not there was a gas leak.

By 6:37 p.m., CSFD announced crews were able to isolate the gas leak to a valve at the water heater. Business representatives for Costco confirmed they plan on working with a contractor to fix the issue.

CSFD says the store will remain closed Wednesday night but should open Thursday morning.

Colorado Springs Utilities was present at the scene.
