Boulder King Soopers to renovate following mass shooting
BOULDER, Colo. (KRDO) -- King Soopers announced Wednesday plans to rebuild the Table Mesa location in Boulder, where a gunman opened fire, killing ten people on March 22.
The grocery store chain will make a substantial investment to completely renovate both the interior and exterior of the store. A partnership with the City of Boulder will help accelerate the rebuilding process to reopen in late fall.
“Our plan to reopen is a testament to the resilience of our associates and the Boulder community. We continue to mourn those who were lost and stand with the other victims of this senseless tragedy. We are committed to supporting our associates who remain on paid emergency leave until June 19 and will be here for the community as we continue the long healing process,” said Steve Burnham, President of King Soopers/City Market. “Our goal is to support one another and grieve and heal together.”
The company is also asking for input from associates and the community. Feedback can be shared by emailing boulderstrong@kingsoopers.com
King Soopers said they will continue to support the needs of workers, families, survivors, and the community through a variety of resources. The Community Resource Center is providing mental health services and assistance to those who have been traumatized by the shooting. Counselors and other professionals from Mental Health Partners, victim advocacy experts, comfort dogs, and acupuncture therapy are all still available to the public too.
On-site, King Soopers' human resources have staff to ask questions about payroll, benefits, review work, and personal related topics for associates.
In addition to rebuilding, the company has done the following to support associates and the community during this difficult time:
- Donating $1 million to the Colorado Healing Fund to support the victims, families, survivors, and the community affected by the tragedy. The contribution was made through the company's public charity.
- Donation of products to the Table Mesa location to Community Food Share, which is the single largest donation received by the organization in its 40-year history. The entire donation is equal to 14 semi-loads. The donation was made in the name of the victims.
These are the names of all ten victims:
- Denny Stong, 20
