Statewide crackdown on street racing results in citations and arrests

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Law enforcement agencies across Colorado are cracking down on street racing.

Colorado Springs Police, the Fountain Police Department, and State Troopers worked together this past week to hand out tickets for racing around the Pikes Peak Region.

This was part of a statewide effort with State Troopers to curb illegal racing. According to CSP, 32 different law enforcement agencies worked together. Across the state, more than 280 citations were given out and four people were arrested.

Drivers who race often face having their licenses revoked and face possible jail time.

9News reports two recent high-profile street racing incidents in the Denver metro area. On April 3, a crash caused by street racing killed an innocent bystander at 18th and Lawrence. On March 7, street racers shut down Interstate 225 near East. Colfax Avenue.

CSP says if you find yourself in a situation with vehicles racing around you or putting yourself and others at risk, try to separate yourself and safely move away from those vehicles. You're asked to contact law enforcement and not intervene. If it's an immediate safety risk, call 9-1-1.

Alternatively, report street racing to Colorado State Patrol at 2-7-7 on your cell phone or at ReportStreetRacing.
