Care and Share Food Bank in need of volunteers, donations amid pandemic

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado has distributed 21,000,000 pounds of food over the course of the pandemic; 50% more food than they provided in 2019.

Officials with the food bank said they still need more volunteers to help distribute all of that food.

Care and Share has 282 partners in 31 counties across southern Colorado. They need volunteers to help get food out to those food pantries from their distribution center.

Despite donating millions of pounds of food last in 2020, officials said they still need more donations, as they've had to buy a lot of food themselves.

In a typical year, they usually have a $350,000 budget for food.

Within the fiscal year between July 2020 and June 2021, they’re expected to spend $3.3 million on food.

Officials said they had to go out of pocket after many of their donation lines were disrupted amid the pandemic.

“Typically we are getting the stuff that goes out of date or that isn't moving very quickly," said Lynne Telford, Chief Executive Officer of Care and Share Food Bank. "When people were hoarding, the grocery stores, their shelves were empty, and they didn’t have anything to give us.”

Those in need of food can go to Care and Share's website to see where food is being distributed near them.

If you're looking to donate, the officials said the donations that go the furthest for families are things like canned proteins and soups, and peanut butter.

In February of 2021, our news team at KRDO is partnering with Care and Share for their "Spread the Love: Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive." We will be helping them collect donations between February 8th and 12th.
