Much-needed grocery store comes to downtown Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- In the shadow of Pikes Peak, a food desert lingered in Olympic City for years, but a new grocery store aims to serve people in downtown Colorado Springs.
The downtown location of the Bread & Butter Neighborhood Market at Nevada and Moreno avenues opened its doors to the public at 7 a.m. Friday. It offers products typical grocery stores would, with a few extras. They will sell food, fresh fruits and vegetables, spirits, craft brews and fresh coffee.
The store marks the first grocery store for downtown Colorado Springs, which hasn't had a grocery store nearby for many years prior to this opening.
This data is collected by the USDA and it found this area is considered a "food desert," meaning a significant number of low-income residents lack access to transportation and are too far away from the nearest supermarket.
The new market is now within walking distance for many people who live downtown. It's an important element for existing residential neighborhoods and new communities coming to the area as more apartments and condos are built.
Bread & Butter Neighborhood Market will hold a Grand Opening on September 11 beginning at 8 a.m. The store will be functioning in "soft opening" mode until then.
