Puebloans to be reimbursed DMV late fees from March to June
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- County officials say residents in Pueblo will be reimbursed any late fees they were charged through the Department of Motor Vehicle from March until June.
Gilbert Bo Ortiz, the Pueblo County Clerk and Recorder, said the county courthouse was closed to the public due to COVID-19 and many people had limited access to renew their license plate tags and complete other necessary paperwork.
“I understand the financial hardships citizens are experiencing during COVID-19 and many are not in the position to pay late fees," Ortiz said. "In addition, we are dealing with a special set of circumstances with the pandemic and it is not the fault of citizens that they were not able to conduct business with the Clerk’s office from March – June as our building was closed to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and to help keep our employees safe."
Residents who received a notice for late fees and who paid the fines will receive a refund through the State of Colorado, which gave counties the choice to opt into its refund program.
Citizens who need to conduct business with the Clerk's Office or DMV can now do so in different ways, so late fees assessed from July onward will not be waived.
