Denver appealing court ruling against urban camping ban

DENVER (AP) - The city of Denver is appealing a court ruling that found its urban camping ban to be unconstitutional.

Its notice of appeal follows a Friday decision in Denver District Court.

A judge ruled that the camping ban that was adopted in 2012 constitutes cruel and unusual punishment against the homeless.

The decision came in a case involving homeless advocate Jerry Burton, who had been cited for violating the ban.

The city's appeal was expected, and follows a refusal by Denver voters in May to overturn the camping ban.
