Colorado Springs women organize toy drive for families evacuated by asbestos exposure
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Two women are organizing a toy drive for families that have been displaced after their apartment buildings tested positive for asbestos.
Following our coverage of the evacuations and subsequent investigation by the Department of Public Health, a couple of locals are getting in the spirit of holiday giving.
Sarah Preciado, one of the organizers, says that she was moved by an interview with a young mother who had to tell her son that Christmas wouldn't be the same this year.
Preciado and co-organizer Stephanie Moore have established four drop off locations for toys:
- Sunrise United Methodist Church at 2655 Briargate Blvd
- Serendipity Hair Emporium at 3237 West Carefree Circle, Building F
- Eden Salon and Barbershop at 12 E Kiowa Street
- Eden Salon and Barbershop, at 610 S 21st Street
If you can't make it to one of the above locations, there's also a GoFundMe page, which promises that 100% of the proceeds will go to purchasing toys for the affected children.
Preciado is working to get an official list of tenants, but tenants are encouraged to bring a water bill, copy of their lease or any other document verifying their residency at one of the affected complexes.
The drive will run through Dec. 19.
