Suspect arrested for brutal beating of 2 men in La Veta

CORRECTION TO THE VIDEO: The suspect’s name is spelled incorrectly. His name is Christopher Forell.

Original Story: A man is in custody after allegedly assaulting two men in La Veta this past weekend, leaving one of them so badly injured that he had to undergo facial reconstructive surgery in Colorado Springs.

Christopher Alan Forell was arrested by the Huerfano County Sheriff’s Office shortly after the alleged assaults on Saturday. Both victims are in stable condition but received critical injuries.

Family members of Emmett Reynolds, one of the victims, say Forell attacked with either a baseball bat or some other kind of club.

“One of Emmett’s friends pulled up to my driveway real fast, and he got out and he said [Reynolds] was hit by a car — that’s what we first thought,” said Sid Popejoy, Emmett’s father.

But La Veta Marshal Harold Willburn said “both of the victims were actually attacked. They were not hit by a car, and there was no vehicle accident.”

Willburn says the reasons for the attacks aren’t entirely clear, but they’re not related.

The two victims were taken to local hospitals by helicopter.

“Seeing my wife, his mother, holding him with the blood all over her, and everything else … his daughter was there. His children were there. They had to see that, and that’s something children should not see,” Popejoy said.

Emmett’s family created a Gofundme page to help pay for the many medical bills coming Emmett’s way. They’ve received thousands of dollars in support.

“Kids Emmett’s age, young families — they have trouble buying diapers sometimes, but yet they go out of their way to give money to my son, which is very, very humbling,” Popejoy said.

Forell is facing charges of first-degree felony assault. The investigation is still ongoing.
