Man arrested after allegedly shooting at driver, leading police on pursuit
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A 28-year-old man was arrested after police say he swerved into another vehicle, fired shots at the driver and later led officers on a pursuit in Colorado Springs Saturday night.
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, Sand Creek patrol officers responded around 10:59 p.m. Aug. 29 to a report of shots fired near Printers Parkway and S. Parkside Drive.
Police said the reporting party told officers he was driving in the area when the suspect swerved into his vehicle and then shot at him. According to arrest records, the reporting party said he was leaving a Loaf N' Jug in the 2800 block of East Pikes Peak Avenue when the suspect "brake checked" him. The reporting party went to pass the suspect, and the suspect rammed into the back left portion of the reporting party's car.
The reporting party began to yell at the suspect to pull over, and when he didn't, he began to follow the suspect. The victim continued following the suspect until officers located him near Airport Road and Jewel Street and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. While the victim was following the suspect, they reported hearing two gunshots come from the vicinity of the suspect's car.
Police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Luke Oehlerking.
Police said Oeherking refused to stop, prompting officers to initiate a pursuit. According to arrest records, the car was going around 80 mph at some points during the pursuit. It traveled from Airport Road and South Chelton Road towards South Parkside Drive.
CSPD says they performed a Pursuit Intervention Technique, or PIT maneuver, in the 100 block of S. Parkside Drive. Oehlerking then ran before officers took him into custody after a short chase.
According to arrest records, Oehlerking says he was trying to merge when he ran into the reporting party's car, and didn't intentionally hit him. He also reports the other car started following him and road raging at him. Oehlerking says he never had a gun, and it had been years since he had last shot once since he was on parole.
According to arrest records, officers were able to find a firearm along the route that Oehlerking had traveled, near the intersection of Airport Road and Jewel Street. The gun had significant damage and was missing a magazine. Officers say when they searched Oehlerking's car, they found a small inside-the-waistband holster, that they determined would fit the gun found, according to arrest records.
Oehlerking was arrested and faces multiple charges, including attempted vehicular assault and vehicular eluding.
