Raccoons are killing chickens in Colorado Springs
Stefan Phillips has had 20 of his chickens killed by raccoons in just the past two years.
He has set traps out, put up fencing, and even hung ammonia rags on his chicken coop, but nothing has worked.
Phillips reached out to Colorado Parks and Wildlife and Animal Control who both said he needed to contact pest and nuisance control.
“Right now we’re seeing upwards of a couple dozen calls a week on raccoons,” said Ted Schmid, owner of Alpine Wildlife Control.
“This time of year, especially with the young raccoons emerging out of nests, adults are showing them how to forage. Raccoons, skunks, coyotes, any of those animals are big enough to take chickens.”
Schmid says it costs at least $150 if they remove an animal.
