Fort Carson could lose $100 million due to emergency declaration

We told you in May when Fort Carson secured more than $100 million for construction projects on the Mountain Post, but those projects are now in jeopardy after President Donald Trump declared a national emergency for a southern border wall.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and Gov. Jared Polis are joining a multistate lawsuit against the Trump administration, and a news release issued Monday cites the potential lost funds as a reason for it.

“After reviewing the specifics of [the declaration] over the weekend, we concluded that Colorado could lose tens of millions in military construction dollars that would be diverted to build the wall.”

The projects at risk of losing funding are in a list provided by the House Appropriations Committee, and three construction projects at Fort Carson are on the list.

At risk are a Special Operations Forces human performance training center, a Special Operations Forces mountaineering facility, and a vehicle maintenance shop. The total cost of the three projects adds up to about $101 million.

It’s not yet certain that these projects will be cut. A senior administration official told ABC News that only lower priority projects would be targeted.

Those were projects that Rep. Doug Lamborn, on the House Armed Services Committee, was proud of securing last year. Despite the risk, Lamborn told KRDO he still supports Trump’s declaration for the border wall.

Fort Carson hasn’t issued a comment on the statement from the AG’s office.
