Storm drops buckets of hail on Colorado Springs’ north side

A severe thunderstorm dumped several inches of hail on many neighborhoods in northern Colorado Springs Thursday.

The hail storm buried a wide swath of the city, snarling traffic on major roads such as Academy Blvd., Powers Blvd., Woodmen Rd., and Briargate Pkwy.

The hail was so deep on I-25 that the interstate was shut down at Woodmen Rd. and CDOT plows were called out to clear the piles of hail.

The Colorado Springs Police Department went on accident alert because of the conditions.

It wasn’t just the amount of hail that caused problems. Hail as large as golf balls fell in some neighborhoods, damaging roofs and cracking car windshields.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for all of southeastern Colorado until 7 p.m.
