Prison time in shooting on Ute Mountain Ute land

A man convicted of shooting a man on the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Reservation has been sentenced to 55 years in federal prison, followed by five years on supervised release.

A federal jury convicted Ute Mountain Ute member Matthew Dewayne Jaramillo earlier this year of assault with intent to commit murder; assault with a dangerous weapon; assault resulting in serious bodily injury; felon in possession of a firearm; and using a firearm during a crime of violence. He was sentenced this week.

Prosecutors say he shot a man multiple times after they had been using methamphetamine at a friend’s house last year. Prosecutors say Jaramillo was a felon who couldn’t buy a gun, but his girlfriend bought one for him.

Jaramillo was later arrested after a chase through Cortez.
