DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- Drinking up to five cups of coffee a day is generally safe for most adults and may even benefit heart health, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association.

The review found that consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, which is about five to eight -ounce cups of black coffee, was linked to a lower risk of heart disease, heart failure and stroke for some people.

Researchers said coffee without added sugar, syrups or cream appears to offer the most health benefits.

However, the statement warns that high doses of caffeine, particularly from energy drinks and energy shots, may increase the risk of high blood pressure and irregular heart rhythms.

Researchers also emphasized that caffeine affects everyone differently based on factors such as age, genetics, medications and overall health.

They recommend people pay attention to how their bodies respond and speak with their healthcare provider about what amount is appropriate for them.
