Healthy Colorado: Weight-loss study looking for more participants for non-invasive gastric balloon

Colorado Springs, COLO. (KRDO) -- Having a healthy diet and maintaining a reasonable weight for your age and body type are an important part of our overall wellbeing. And there's a new weight loss study looking for more participants in southern Colorado.

It's called the Allurion Balloon for weight loss. And it's one of the easiest options on the market, because you only have to take one pill. There's no surgery, no endoscopy, and no anesthesia. UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital is one of 20 sites across the country and the only one in the state to host this weight loss study.

The Allurion Balloon is designed to take up space in your stomach to help you feel fuller, eat smaller portions, and lose weight. You swallow the capsule while your doctor takes a quick X-Ray to make sure the balloon is in your stomach. Once in place, the balloon is filled with eater and the tube is removed, completing the process in about 15 minutes.

"We really want people who have an age range of 22-65. They should have a BMI between 30 and 40", says Dr. Shelby Sullivan, director of Gastroenterology Metabolic and Bariatric Program at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. "That's typically about 30-100 pounds overweight depending on if you are a man or woman. We're also looking for people who've tried to lose weight once before, either doing it themselves or some other form of weight loss method."

The Audacity clinical study is going on now and they are looking for more participants. The study will require 19 in-person visits to the UCHealth University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. There will also be lifestyle meetings. Working out and staying active is encouraged for this study. At the end of four months, the balloon will empty on its own and pass naturally.
