Healthy women: How to prioritize nutrition for the whole family

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- This time of year it is typically a bit easier for many parents to stay motivated with a diet and exercise routine. Staying active outdoors and having fresh snacks for the whole family can really make a difference. And it is proven that moms play a pivotal role in modeling a healthy lifestyle.

"Getting people to understand that one diet is not best for all and there are so many fads that we have an opportunity to find what is right for us and personalize it," says nutritionist, Tam John.

Tam John has been in the nutrition world for about 7 years. And has always encouraged people to turn back to the basics when it comes to health.

"Foundations of health is really important and balancing macronutrients and a good place for people to start is with good old water," says John. "Water is a macronutrient and dehydration is really a chronic problem in America. So if we start with getting our water right that helps with our energy levels, weight, it helps natural flushing of toxins and so on."

John says to start the day with a glass of room temperature water with lemon. And continue to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. When it comes to diet, don't over-restrict. Have healthy snacks prepared and ready to grab on the go.

"Each time we eat to have a little bit of protein," says John. "So maybe the ideal serving is something around the size of your palm of hand and then going from there."

Create an exercise and diet non-negotiable plan and stick to it each week. John says this is something that can translate well from moms to the rest of the family.

"Women have the power really, that's my experience and it's just pivotal for families and nutrition it's an important part of pre-conception if you are thinking of having a family and really important for the kiddos it helps to raise really good eaters which can be a game-changer for their nutrition for life-long," says John.
