Heavy snow causes problems on the roof
Heavy snow can cause problems on the roof. It can even be deadly if the roof collapses under the weight of all that snow.
It happened on the east coast when a massive winter storm dumped feet of snow.
In southern Colorado, snow isn’t as heavy because it doesn’t have as much moisture.
Roofing crews say there are no reports of collapses that they’ve heard of from our recent snow.
But they say heavy snow and ice can do damage, thanks to something called ice damming.
“This happens when a lot of heat builds up under the roof structure. This can cause water to run down the shingles. Once it hits cooler air that’s not insulated it can then freeze and back up underneath the shingles,” said Tye Williams of Total Roofing.
Removing an ice dam from your roof immediately after spotting the signs can be critical to helping prevent damage to your home.
One way to remove an ice dam is to melt it by using calcium chloride.
