Trees planted near Colorado College to commemorate Earth Day
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- After the December wind storm, dozens of trees were uprooted in the neighborhoods surrounding Colorado College. Friday, new trees were planted near the campus to replace those and to celebrate Earth Day.
The Near North End Neighborhood Association, City of Colorado Springs Foresters, and Colorado College teamed up to plant new on the center median at the corner of Wahsatch and Willamette Avenue.
A dozen trees, all different species, were donated by the college and planted by volunteers and city foresters today, with the hopes of bringing back some of the natural beauty the trees in the area once offered.
Colorado College lost nearly 50 trees back in December and the Old North End neighborhood and surrounding areas lost so many more.
Cheryl Brown is the present of the Near North End Neighborhood Association and said they are so excited to give the college and nearby Palmer High School the tree canopies they deserve.
"A canopy is just so important for a neighborhood and the city [and] for the earth, to keep the heat down. We're ready to do this and excited," Brown said.
