1 dead after officer-involved shooting in Pueblo’s East Side

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Pueblo Police officer was involved in a shooting incident with a suspect and police say a standoff occurred Monday morning in Pueblo's East Side.

According to the Pueblo Police Department, the incident started when code enforcement officers went to a home just before 9 a.m. near 19th Street and N. Monument Ave. for a complaint of weeds and litter in the front yard. Police say a man at the home then threatened officers with a gun, and code enforcement called Pueblo Police for backup.

“Somebody in the residence exited and threatened them with a firearm," said Sgt. Frank Ortega with the Pueblo Police. "Police were called, police arrived on scene. Shortly after one of our police officers hears that shots were fired. There is one deceased male on scene.”

Pueblo Police clarified that no officer was hit by bullets, but one person was left dead after being shot by an officer. It's not clear if the suspect fired a gun.

Authorities have not confirmed if the man killed by police was the same man that threatened police.

Two adult men barricaded themselves in the house after the incident. They didn't surrender peacefully until about 12:00 p.m., two hours after the shooting.

This is the second officer-involved shooting in Pueblo this year. The first shooting was not deadly.

Editor's Note: Pueblo Police initially told KRDO that an officer had been shot; that information has been corrected in this article.
