Two arrested in connection to La Junta homicide

LA JUNTA, Colo. (KRDO) -- Two people were arrested in connection with a homicide that happened May 14, in the Morningside Heights neighborhood.

According to La Junta police, a man was shot inside his vehicle in front of his apartment building in the 1500 block of East Sixth Street.

Authorities later identified the victim as Ernesto Apodaca, 48.

Multiple agencies, including the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Otero County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State Patrol, Otero County Coroner's Office, and the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office began investigating the homicide.

On Tuesday, CBI announced two people were arrested.

Mathew Perez, 38, and Nikki Olivas, 32, were arrested in Finney County, Kansas, right outside of Garden City.

Perez faces charges of First Degree Murder and Olivas faces charges of Accessory to First Degree Murder.

According to CBI, they were taken into custody and are being held without bond in the Finney County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility pending extradition to Otero County.

CBI says it's believed Apodaca and Perez knew each other, however, the circumstances surround the shooting are still under investigation.
