Castle Rock caregiver sentenced after alledgly stealing more than $110K worth of jewelry from family of disabled son

23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A Castle Rock caregiver was sentenced to 90 days in prison after alledgly admitting to stealing more than $110,000 in jewelry from the family of a quadriplegic son she was caring for.

The 23rd Judicial District Attorney's Office (DA) says that 32-year-old Elsa “Gabby” Montejo-Fuentes had been working for the family for five years when the family made a report in January 2024 of a missing wedding ring and band.

According to the DA, the wedding band was later found inside the family's vacuum cleaner. The DA said Montejo-Fuentes allegedly complained that the vacuum was having problems before then.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office later discovered that Montejo-Fuentes had pawned a Rolex watch and other pieces of the family's jewelry beginning in August 2023, says the DA.

When detectives confronted Montejo-Fuentes, they say she denied the claims but later admitted to the thefts when law enforcement showed her receipts from the pawn shop documenting the transaction.

Montejo-Fuentes then turned over the missing wedding ring to a detective, who said it had been stored in the trunk of her vehicle.

During her sentencing, officials say the family called Montejo-Fuentes a "cruel, master manipulator."

Montejo-Fuentes pleaded guilty to felony theft and, in addition to 90 days in prison, must pay more than $39,000 in restitution to the family and serve four years of probation.
