Denver Broncos cheerleaders and mascot visit COVID-19 vaccination site
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) - To ensure all Coloradans get vaccinated as part of Governor Jared Polis’s 'Vaccines for All' campaign, the Denver Broncos cheerleaders, and Miles the Mascot visited the community vaccination site at the State Fairgrounds in Pueblo on Tuesday.
The goal was to encourage Coloradans to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The Denver Broncos also handed out giveaways to those who received their vaccine.
Pueblo County has seen a lower vaccine rate than other counties in Colorado. In Pueblo, just shy of 62,000 people have gotten at least one dose, which is only 46.8% of the population
John Bueno is one of those residents. He's lived in Pueblo for 16 years and is also a Denver Broncos fan, so he says getting his second dose of the Pfizer vaccine for him was fun.
"I am a big Broncos fan as you can tell, my truck is covered with Broncos, my house is Broncos, I got my Broncos jersey on, I think it is really cool," said Bueno.
When he saw Miles the Mascot…he had to get out of his car and capture the moment.
Though it was fun, his reason for doing his part and getting vaccinated against COVID-19 goes beyond his love for the team.
"I did have a cousin in Denver who passed away from it and I have a couple of friends who have gotten sick from it, they didn't pass away, but it is just the right thing to do. Everybody needs to do it," added Bueno.
Julie Brooks, a spokesperson for FEMA says they've recently noticed more people recently coming out to get vaccinated.
"This is a pretty good day today, with almost 1,000 people coming in, and that is really what we like to see. We have seen an uptick in the last couple of days and looking at the schedule in the coming week, we are higher during the week than we have been in the past," added Brooks.
With appointments not being necessary at this site, she says they see between100 and 200 walk-ins a day.
Starting this Saturday, the Johnson and Johnson vaccine at this site.
The Colorado State Fairgrounds vaccination site goes on every day of the week from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. Appointments aren't needed, but they are encouraged. For more information click here.
