Absolutely Colorado: Mobile kitchen provides free meals to ‘Aspen Acres’ fire crews, victims

KRDO

PUEBLO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- People are stepping up all over southern Colorado to help where they can as the "Aspen Acres" fire continues to burn across Pueblo County.

One group is making sure there are hot meals waiting for fire crews as they leave the fire.

Fellowship of the Rockies is hosting a mobile kitchen to provide those meals at no cost. So far, they've been able to serve 3,000 meals.

It's not just fire crews, but victims of the fire could also stop by and get help.

The mobile kitchen comes from a non-profit called "Serve 6.8" that was born from the "Hyde Park" fire of 2012 in northern Colorado.

They cook meals that get transported to crews actively fighting the fire, and at the same time have a safe, air-conditioned place for people to walk up and get help for themselves.

"We'll talk with them. We'll visit with them. It's one of the greatest things that we can do is just sit there and listen to them and hear their stories," said Charlie Jones, senior pastor at Fellowship of the Rockies. "Then we can also meet some of their immediate needs with some supplies or some things they need to make their life a little bit easier. So it's what we're called to do is love our neighbor and love them."

They have served options from a hot meal and sides to sandwiches.

As of publishing, they plan to serve meals through Friday, July 10.
