Colorado Springs couple heading to Louisiana to help in Hurricane Laura relief
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Coloradans will be traveling to some of the hardest-hit areas in Louisiana to help in the aftermath of Hurricane Laura.
For Mary LaVergne and her husband, Blake, the storm and damage hits closer to home because for them, it once was home.
"I'm about to go back to a place where I grew up and there is nothing left. You can't even go to your favorite restaurants," he said.
The couple says they will be packing their truck and RV with supplies, and driving to Lake Charles, where their family lives, on Friday.
"I've been through hurricanes before and this one has definitely devastated the people I went to school with, friends, families," he said.
Sunday they posted to Facebook to ask if anyone wanted to help by donating supplies. Within a few hours, that post had hundreds of comments full of other Coloradans wanting to help.
"I didn't expect the outpour we have from the community. We figured a few people would donate," Mary said.
