COS councilmembers finish initial review of citizens advisory board

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The City Council of Colorado Springs announced Thursday that it has completed the initial review for the Law Enforcement Transparency and Accountability Commission.

The city council says it received more than 800 applications for the new commission, which is intended to improve police accountability and communication between law enforcement and citizens.

All nine council members reviewed the applications and recommended 100 of them to advance to the next phase of the selection process.

“The Council was very impressed by the quality and quantity of the applications,” said Richard Skorman, the city council president.  “It was an exceptionally difficult decision on who should proceed in the selection process. I want to personally thank everyone who took the time to apply and has shown interest in this important new Commission.”

The council says it has sent out brief questionnaires to all the recommended candidates to learn more about them. Once those surveys are returned, the applicants will be selected for an interview.

The selection process will be further discussed at the city council's next work session on Monday, August 10 at 10 a.m. The council expects to have the commission appointed by late August or early September.
