Violence erupts at Teller County protest demanding release of ICE detainees

teller ICE protest fight

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A group of protesters in Teller County rallied their cars outside a detention facility Friday evening, demanding the release of people detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Around 7 p.m., authorities say a fight broke out between protesters and counter-protesters, with deputies rushing to the scene to stop it. It's unclear which group started the scuffle, but no one has filed a report according to the sheriff's office.

The Teller County Sheriff's Office has been the target of lawsuits in past years due to its agreement with ICE to hold detainees and exercise the same powers as federal immigration officers.

Protesters gathered Friday to demand the immediate release of ICE detainees being held there and also called on the County Commissioners to cancel the contract with ICE.
