Joshua Vigil’s daughters speak out following another fatal shooting involving CSPD officer

VIGIL3

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Thursday's fatal encounter between a suspect and an off-duty officer marked the second shooting involving a Colorado Springs officer this year, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office assumes responsibility in shooting investigations involving Colorado Springs police officers.

Last year, Joshua Vigil was one of five people killed in a shootout with Colorado Springs police.

The day that Colorado Springs police shot her dad 20 times, Angelyna Reed says she wanted answers, answers she says she never fully got.

Investigators say that Vigil was under the influence of drugs and pointed a firearm at officers when they opened fire.

The three officers involved in Vigil's fatal shooting last year were Lucas Aragon, Cole Jones and Sgt. Mark Keller.

In December, the 4th Judicial District attorney's office decided they would not file charges and the officers were ruled justified.

Vigil's family says they don't agree with the decisions officers made that day, but Angelyna has learned these types of shootings continue to happen and she's choosing to speak out.

"It impacted us pretty severely. That's what people don't understand. Not only do we have to deal with his death every single day, we didn't get to say goodbye. It wasn't expected," Reed said.

She says seven months later, her family still deals with the loss every day and it's upsetting to know another person has lost their lives at the hands of a police officer.

"There is clearly a pattern here and we need to get justice here for everybody, not just my father," she said.

She's left hoping the community can come together to hold officers accountable, wanting them to use deadly force as a last resort.

"They are supposed to serve and protect and instead it's like they kill and neglect. They neglect the people that really need help," Reed said.
