Shooting involving Colorado Springs Police under investigation Sunday morning

MGN

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Colorado Springs Police were involved in a shooting with at least one suspect just before 1 a.m. near the 4200 block of Deerfield Hills Road.

According to police, officers arrived on-scene just after 10:30 p.m. the night of May 18 following reports of gunshots coming from inside of a home in the area. Police say when they arrived, they attempted to check the welfare of the suspect, who then proceeded to open fire from within the home, and into the surrounding neighborhood.

Police say patrol officers requested tactical support, but the suspect exited the front door of the home, wielding a handgun, before support could arrive. Officers say they verbally engaged the suspect in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully. When the suspect refused to obey commands from police, at least one officer fired one round which hit the suspect.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital where they later died, according to Colorado Springs Police.

Colorado Springs Police Department announced the shooting via its X account. The department also noted that, per CSPD policy, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office will investigate this officer-involved shooting. All further investigative updates will come from EPSO. CSPD will release a significant event briefing video with body-worn camera footage regarding this incident within the next 21 days.
