Care and Share to give 400 food boxes to Colorado Springs veterans, active duty service members

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - On Wednesday, Aug. 30, several volunteers from Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center arrived at the Colorado Springs Care and Share Food Bank to help pack 400 food boxes for veterans and active duty military members. All of this was done to give back to the community during the annual 'Patriot Day Give Back,' which happens Friday, September 1.

The 400 food boxes will be distributed to veterans and service members who are currently in need of some extra food assistance. Inside the food boxes, people can find granola bars, peanut butter, beans, canned chicken, pasta, and more.

"Food distribution and food lines are a good indicator of local economic conditions and so for a lot of people especially our active duty military men and women or our veterans a lot of them are living paycheck to paycheck," said Nate Springer, President and CEO of Care and Share Food Bank. "When something else in the environment happens utility bills go up, the cost of fuel goes up, rental cost or home cost go up those are fixed costs that people can't pay a portion of and so when something like that goes up a lot of people find their way to the charitable food system because you can supplement your income with food," added Springer.

Officials with Colorado Springs Care and Share Food Bank said they have been a proud partner with Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center for the past eight years.

Springer said he hopes to continue for the following year to come.
