13-year-old battles life-threatening injuries following dirt bike crash

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) - On October 13, 2025, around 5:42 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to a crash involving two dirt bike riders, juveniles, who were riding on private property.

PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Investigation underway following dirt bike accident involving juvenile

Both juveniles were transported to a local area hospital, according to CSP. A 14-year-old boy was transported to the hospital by ambulance with serious injuries, and a 13-year-old boy was transported to the hospital by air ambulance, said CSP. Troopers say the 13-year-old rider has life-threatening injuries.

CSP says, according to preliminary reports, both juveniles were riding in an abandoned golf course near Rolling Ridge Road. A blue Yamaha dirt bike was westbound on a dirt trail near Rolling Ridge Road, and a green Kawasaki dirt bike was southbound on the track in the same location, said troopers.

Both dirt bikes went up a hill on the track from different sides, and both dirt bikes became airborne, explained CSP. As the blue Yamaha was in the air, the green Kawasaki traveled under it, with the back tire of the Yamaha striking the head of the 13-year-old boy, troopers reported.

CSP says when the investigating trooper arrived, both riders were found on the ground, separated from their dirt bikes. Both riders were wearing motorcycle helmets at the time of the crash, said troopers.

CSP is still investigating the cause of the crash.

One neighbor tells KRDO13 they heard the sound of dirt bikes before they heard screaming on Monday night.

"Next thing you know is we hear a lot of loud screaming. So then, you know, I hear screaming, call 911. The kids are kind of scattered. I kind of look out the window, and I see an adult running towards them, carrying a medical bag. And I knew that something serious had happened. And it's just, again, very unfortunate that a serious injury occurred, especially when something that we've been trying to prevent for months now," said neighbor Aaron Blevins.

Neighbors tell KRDO13 they have contacted law enforcement many times regarding the dirt bikes and kids on the abandoned golf course. Previously, CSP told KRDO13 that law enforcement had received previous calls about illegal dirt bike activity and had issued multiple warrants to individuals before this incident.

"The whole neighborhood is just being like, 'Hey, we don't hate dirt bikes. We don't hate kids having fun.' But that's why these places that are authorized to ride they have those medical facilities there. They have medical personnel who can respond in case something like that does happen. And unfortunately, something like that did happen in an unauthorized area. And it took a long time where seconds can matter, minutes can matter," shared Blevins.

The Fountain Police Department says it has received 43 calls for service to the now-closed Appletree Golf Course since May 2025.

"It's taken a serious injury to where I think now individuals will probably take this more seriously," said Blevins, "It's wide open out there. I think there does need to be better signage, better fences. I think the owners of the property, along with the city, need to kind of take a better stance of like, hey, under no circumstances should there be electric vehicles on this property. The same kind of comparison, I say, if I'm driving and I have a cell phone, I'm going to get a ticket. So the same way that it's just like, hey, I understand they're kids, but unfortunately, these kinds of accidents happen because they don't know. And then, you know, that's what we're dealing with today because nobody held them accountable. So I think that's really what all the neighbors want is just to kind of, you know, bring this accountability to the right people, prevent this from happening again."

According to the El Paso County Assessor, the private property is owned by multiple business entities.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office tells us they responded to the abandoned golf course once for reports of illegal dirt bike riding, but once they arrived, they say they did not find anyone at the course.

"I absolutely feel for the family. I feel for the kid who's put in this uncertain situation that shouldn't have happened," said Blevins.
