9-year-old dies two days after getting hit by a car while riding scooter in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – A Colorado Springs family is grieving the loss of their 9-year-old daughter who passed away after getting hit by a vehicle while riding a scooter.
Tuesday at 7:12 p.m., officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to the intersection of Overton St. and Michigan Ave. on reports of an auto vs. pedestrian accident.
At the scene, police discovered the pedestrian was a young girl. The child suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
According to her family, Makaylyn Marie Lee passed away Thursday at 7:30 a.m., roughly 36 hours after the accident.
The Lee family said Makaylyn attended Atlas Elementary School.
A memorial is growing for Makaylyn at the intersection where the crash happened. Over the last two days, family and friends have gathered there to remember her. People have left balloons, flowers, letters, and Beanie Babies - which were her favorite.
Her parents told KRDO she brought so much happiness into this world.
"She is a bundle of joy," said Marvin Lee, Makaylyn's father. "She's the type of girl that is the center of attention. She has attracted all the neighbor's attention."
Marvin said she was just a block away from her house riding her toy scooter with her friends when the crash happened.
"Kids, it doesn't matter if they're five all the way up to 15 years old, kids aren't thinking, they're not looking for cars, and unfortunately this is what happened with my baby coming off a sidewalk playing on the toy," said Marvin.
Despite several surgeries to try and save her life, Makaylyn didn't make it.
Now, as the Lee Family is preparing to lay Makaylyn to rest, they're holding onto the memories they shared during her short life.
"She would check on me every day, she would give me hugs in the morning, hugs after school, 'Daddy I love you.' So I got three hugs, three kisses daily," Marvin said.
Police have not said whether or not the driver will face any charges. The crash is still under investigation.
