2 dead, 1 toddler airlifted to hospital, after winds swamp kayaks at Lake Pueblo State Park

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO)- Two people are dead, and a toddler is in the hospital after strong winds caused three kayaks to swamp in Lake Pueblo State Park, according to park officials.

At a little before 6 P.M. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) rangers found a body they were searching for using an underwater drone, not far from where the kayaks submerged.

CPW says wind and waves were heavy at the park, causing one kayak carrying an adult and toddler to fill with water. That's when two other people in kayaks came to help, but they also capsized.

Strong winds made the rescue difficult. Rangers were able to pull the toddler out of the water and airlift them to the hospital. They were also able to find one body immediately. But according to CPW, rangers could not search for the missing kayaker by boat because the wind speeds were too strong. As a result, they searched from shore with an underwater drone.

This is a developing story, check back later for more details.
