Man accused of crashing Park County patrol vehicle on Highway 24 in Teller County

Teller County Sheriff's Office

TELLER COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A man was arrested by the Teller County Sheriff's Office following a high-speed chase on Hwy. 24.

According to court documents, on June 20 deputies received a report of a domestic violence incident in-progress on the 1700 block of Vagabond Creek Dr. At 3:27 a.m., witnesses told Teller County Dispatch that a man appeared to be intoxicated just before patrol arrived to the scene.

When deputies arrived they noticed a marked Park County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle near the residence. According to court documents, one of the Teller County deputies stated they pointed their flashlight at the marked patrol vehicle. The deputy then told the man in the marked vehicle, identified as 33-year-old Jeremiah Taylor, that they are from the Teller County Sheriff's Office.

Once the vehicle stopped, the Teller County deputy instructed Taylor to turn off the vehicle and step out. However, a deputy stated Taylor didn't comply with the verbal commands. Court documents say Taylor then accelerated the vehicle at a high rate of speed down the driveway, turned onto Vagabond Creek Dr., then traveled toward Hwy. 24.

According to court documents, Taylor exited the patrol vehicle and asked deputies, "Where's the old man that's going to shoot me?" After that, deputies say Taylor got back into the patrol vehicle and drove westbound on Hwy. 24. Deputies say Taylor failed to yield to many marked Teller County patrol vehicles.

As Taylor continued traveling down the highway, investigators say he reached over 110 miles per hour and passed vehicles on double yellow dividers on the road. Investigators also say he failed to obey traffic control devices.

Taylor continued to speed the vehicle onto County Rd. 77 and eventually made his way onto Matkat Rd. Court documents say he then wrecked the patrol vehicle many miles down Matkat Rd. and fled on foot. Deputies stated they gave many verbal commands to Taylor to show his hands, but Taylor didn't comply. Investigators say Taylor pulled out a knife following the verbal commands, and a deputy tasered him before a round was fired from a patrol rifle.

Deputies say they tried to place Taylor under arrest but he placed his hands under his stomach to prevent any restraints on his wrists. He was eventually placed under arrest. According to the court document, Taylor has been arrested on the following charges:

  • Class-Four Felony for Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft
  • Class-Four Felony for Second-Degree Burglary
  • Class-Five Felony for Vehicular Eluding
  • Class-Two Misdemeanor for Obstructing A Peace Officer
  • Class-Two Misdemeanor for Resisting Arrest
  • Class-Two Misdemeanor for Reckless Endangerment
  • Class-Two Misdemeanor Traffic Offense for Reckless Driving
