Colorado lawmaker wants voters to make decision on future of daylight saving time

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Tired of changing the clocks back and forth? Colorado State Sen. Jeff Bridges is, and he's hoping there are enough voters in the Centennial State to do away with the time changes once and for all.

Bridges is set to introduce a resolution that would put the time change on a ballot for voters to weigh in on.

Bridges says studies show human risk by switching clocks back and forth, including an increase in heart attacks, strokes, car crashes, and workplace injuries.

"So it gives the people of Colorado say and whether or not they want to continue this insane process that causes health problems, causes decreases in productivity, causes the sleep schedule of kids to go totally out of whack. Do you want to keep doing that? Or do you want to restore some sanity to what time is around the air and not adjust your clocks?" Bridges said.

But it's not as easy as just asking voters. Current federal law only allows states to choose to solely operate in standard time, not daylight saving time. (Reminder: daylight saving time is "spring forward" one hour, standard time is "fall back" one hour.)

The resolution that Bridges plans to introduce would ask if they prefer to move to daylight saving time if US Congress allows it. If Congress doesn't change the law and the resolution is passed by voters, Colorado would solely operate on standard time.
