Mayor Suthers hosts Polis in downtown Colorado Springs Thursday
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers will welcome Colorado Governor Jared Polis to Colorado Springs Thursday.
Mayor Suthers and Governor Polis will tour the newly re-designed Vermijo signature street, view the awe-inspiring U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum and visit the iconic new pedestrian bridge connecting downtown to America the Beautiful Park.
Together, the two will explore Southwest downtown Colorado Springs' infrastructure, improvements and landmarks.
Today, Governor Jared Polis signed a historic $5.3 billion state transportation bill into law at Floyd Hill. This new bipartisan law will establish sustainable funding, support the Colorado Comeback, save Coloradans money, accelerate climate goals, and advance equity. Governor Polis adds, "It’s also sustainable funding for downtown modernization, upgrades, parks."
Colorado has a $9 billion backlog in new roadway projects and deferred maintenance, according to the state transportation department.
Speaking of the bill, Mayor John Suthers said, "This is a historic event, we’ve been trying for over a decade to get enough transportation money in Colorado other than band-aids."
The incoming funding will help finance the $40 million improvement project at Powers Boulevard and Research Parkway in Colorado Springs.
During Thursday's meeting, Governor Polis said, "Colorado Springs is really one of our treasured city’s in Colorado for residents, for attracting tourists from around the world."
