Platte Floral hoping to fulfill 1,000 orders on Mother’s Day 2021, still accepting walk-in orders
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Platte Floral has been helping customers say everything from “I love you” to “I’m sorry” for a hundred years, but what they might help people say the most is "Happy Mother's Day."
Gene Wright, a designer at Platte Floral, said Mother's Day is their busiest holiday after Valentine's Day each year.
"It's a celebration of their life," said Wright. "Without moms, there would be no life."
Though there isn't a shortage of flower orders for 2021 Mother's Day, there is a shortage of supplies -- it's the aftermath of several farms closing because of the pandemic.
The sparse availability is causing inflation and driving up prices for buyers like Platte Floral.
“There's an increase on gas prices. They’re charging us extra for freight, they’re charging us extra for cargo boxes," said Wright. "All those additional charges play into the purchase of our flowers.”
In anticipation of the hit on the market, store owner Dianne Tolbert said they placed their product order at suppliers all the way back in January of 2021. So that means customers still have a lot of flowers to choose from.
"We have foliage plants, hanging baskets, all the way to fresh flowers, cut flowers,” said Wright. "We had a lot of orders for hydrageas this year, and roses. We see a lot of lilies going out."
Platte Floral is hoping to fulfill 1,000 orders for Mother's Day 2021 -- 200 more than they did in 2020.
Platte flowers is only accepting walk-in orders for Mother's Day.
They'll be open until 2 p.m., Sunday, May 9th.
Platte Floral is located on 1417 E Platte Ave.
