Marian House continues serving meals despite obstacles of Covid-19
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Normally serving 650 meals a month, the Marian House has seen a major decline this year due to Covid-19.
Andy Barton, CEO of Catholic Charities for Central Colorado said, “We think that a lot of that number was around duplicate meals and not people but we are serving about 150 to 200 meals compared to that 650 on a given month.”
Like many other businesses and non-profits, the Marian House had to learn how to adapt. With the state currently in level red restrictions, indoor dining for the Marian House is not a possibility at this time.
“Since the most recent changes in the regulations that have come through the state, we have gone back to serving a hot meal outside," said Barton. "Just like restaurants we are not able to serve inside and so folks line ups, come through and grab a hot to-go meal."
But with Christmas right around the corner, despite Covid-19, the Marian House still plans on serving a Christmas dinner.
“We are going to keep that meal in place. It will most likely be served as a to-go meal but we will be here for folks on Christmas if we are the place they need to come for a meal,” said Barton.
With the restrictions, it hasn’t been an easy year for Catholic Charities and the Marian House. But, they are happy to note that since the start of the pandemic they have not missed a single meal.
“One of the really amazing things about this year has been that the outpouring support from the people who have the ability to support really has been tremendous. And that has been a benefit to the vulnerable population of Colorado Springs,” Barton said.
If you would like to donate, Barton says volunteer time and monetary donations are best.
