Over 300 Fremont Correctional inmates test positive for COVID-19
CANON CITY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Inmates at Fremont Correctional Facility are receiving additional rounds of COVID-19 testing following a large outbreak.
According to the Department of Corrections, 303 inmates at Fremont Correctional Facility have tested positive for COVID-19. The coronavirus case count has continued to grow over the last week.
"We are updating the external testing website daily as test results are returning. We have held several virtual town hall discussions for friends and family members to get updates on our operations and to have a chance to ask questions of our Executive staff. We also have a constituent services staff member who is available to help answer questions for inmate families," DOC spokesperson Annie Skinner said.
Skinner said that the "vast majority of inmates" have either mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. DOC officials said inmates have discretion on whether or not their families are notified if they test positive for COVID-19.
"CDOC has brought in extra medical staff, including emergency medical response professionals, who are at the facility 24/7 to monitor inmates," Skinner said.
All inmates at Fremont Correctional Facility have been provided KN95 masks and are required to wear them, according to DOC officials. Internal movement is also limited during the pandemic and DOC tests and isolates inmates before moving them.
