Gov. Polis denounces violence, encourages protesters to get tested for COVID-19
DENVER (KRDO) -- Colorado Gov. Jared Polis had strong messages of support for peaceful protesters while also encouraging them to get tested for COVID-19.
Polis spoke during a press conference Tuesday about the protests for police reform in the wake of George Floyd's killing -- daily protests in Denver and Colorado Springs since the weekend have turned violent on occasion late at night, and police have ended up using tear gas to clear out crowds.
But Polis recognized why the peaceful protesters have taken to the streets.
"This is a pattern, we see it starkly and we see it visually with George Floyd, but we all know in our heart of hearts this has happened countless times without video footage," Polis said. "It's about a pattern of injustice; not just limited to our criminal justice system, but many areas of American life that we take for granted. We need to listen to those who are crying out for reform and we need to take action."
Protests continued Tuesday in Colorado Springs as Polis spoke. Even Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski addressed some of the protesters, according to witnesses.
"To those peacefully protesting, I see you, I hear you and I grieve with you, and more importantly I want to work with you to make Colorado better and America better," Polis said. "It's unfortunate the destruction of property … has distracted from the righteous message, the pure message of equality and reform."
Polis also said that protesters have been gathering in large groups while the COVID-19 pandemic has lingered in the state. He encouraged people who were at the protests to get tested for the coronavirus seven days after they attended one of the large gatherings.
Polis said the testing site at the Pepsi Center is now offering free tests to anyone who may have been exposed to the coronavirus. Click here for more information on statewide testing sites.
