Woman charged with attempted murder after driving down embankment with 5-year-old in Chaffee County

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A woman has been arrested and charged with attempted first degree murder after she and a 5-year-old passenger were rescued from the bottom of a steep embankment Wednesday.

Emergency responders recovered a vehicle just before 2 p.m. from a ditch on County Road 321 north of County Road 162, the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office said.

The driver was identified as a Chaffee County resident, 28-year-old Phuong Nu Hoang Dong Nguyen. Nguyen and a 5-year-old passenger were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

Nguyen charged with criminal attempt first degree murder and the child was released to a guardian, the sheriff's office said.

It's not clear at this time what led up to crash. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
