13-year-old hit by Colorado Springs driver who didn’t stop for school bus
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Police in Colorado Springs say traffic charges are likely for a driver who didn't stop for a school bus and ended up hitting a teenager Monday morning.
The crash happened in the 2600 block of N. Chestnut Street, according to CSPD. The driver, who hasn't been identified, reportedly hit a 13-year-old who was crossing the roadway near a bus that was picking up children.
Police say the teen was taken to the hospital with "serious but non-life threatening injuries."
Devra Ashby, a spokesperson for School District 11, says bus drivers often see people violate the law.
"On average we have about 5 to 10 stop-arm violations per month," she said. "Every year in Colorado Springs we have kids hit by vehicles."
Ashby reminds everybody that a stop arm requires people on both sides of the road to comply and wait until there are no more flashing red lights.
"The slower you're going through those school areas and those school buses, the safer you're going to keep your community as well as children that attend those schools," Ashby said.
Failing to obey a school bus stop arm can land a driver with a misdemeanor traffic offense, six points on your license and a fine of up to $300. A second offense can cost up to $1000.
