Recycle your tree in annual TreeCycle event
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Wondering what to do with your Christmas tree now that Christmas is over? Starting Saturday, El Paso County will be launching its annual “TreeCycle” event.
Kathy Andrew with El Paso County said, “We hope that individuals will bring their live trees and recycle them and actually turn them into mulch.”
And once you hand over that tree, you can actually take some of that mulch for yourself.
“And there is mulch available for pickup. Mulch is really good to put around your trees, especially here in the winter, when we want to hold some of that moisture in the soil,” said Andrew.
The TreeCycle event will begin on Saturday and run through this weekend as well as the weekend of January 4-5. There will be multiple drop-off areas around the city where you can take your tree.
“There are seven locations," said Andrew. "There is Baptist Trailhead in the North, Falcon Trailhead out East, Cottonwood Creek Park, UC Health Park -- which is the old Sky Sox Stadium -- Rock Ledge ranch over on the West side of town and Memorial Park Downtown as well.”
The county has run this event for the last 18 years and because of it, they have raised a ton of money for youth sports.
“This is to support El Pomar Sports here in El Paso County in Colorado Springs. We’ve been doing this almost 20 years now and we raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to support youth sports.”
Outside of the next two weekends, trees and donations can be made at Rocky Top Resources starting January 2nd through the 31st. However, you are required to pay a $5 fee.
