The School Buzz: D11 dual language immersion class teaches Dia de los Muertos

The day following Halloween is a very important holiday for many people of Mexican heritage. November 1, and into November 2, is known as Dia de los Muertos, or "Day of the Dead." Will Rogers Elementary, which has a dual language immersion program, already celebrated the holiday by allowing some of its students to teach others about it.

The purpose of Dia de los Muertos is to honor and celebrate lost loved ones. First graders at Rogers made their lesson on the holiday fun and engaging. Ms. Vazquez's DLI students taught through songs, masks, bread of the dead, marigolds and altars for deceased loved ones.

The principal, Natalia Brunton, said it's "great" they do this type of lesson before November 1. And D11 is proud as well, saying Rogers "offers rich cultural and academic experiences" to their students.
