The School Buzz: Bessemer Bobcats raise breast cancer awareness

A school in Pueblo is taking steps to bring awareness to breast cancer.

Bessemer Academy students, teachers, family members, and friends all recently took laps around the school playground to raise awareness to fight the disease. It's a tradition the school has done in recent years each October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Bobcats also donate a quarter or more of each day, for a whole week during the month, to participate in awareness themes: “Be a Hero of Hope,” “Knock the Socks off Cancer,” “Pair up Against Cancer” and “Together We Fight and Win.” The week is capped off with a “Walk for a Cure,” which means breast cancer survivors walked with students and staff.

All donations from the walk are sent to the National Breast Cancer Foundation on behalf of the Bobcats and the Bessemer Academy school community. In all, more than $300 was raised for donations to the Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin.
